The main objective of the proposed study is to examine quality of mortality data from the large sample surveys conducted in India over the past two and a half decades. The specific objectives are to: compare mortality indicators from these surveys to SRS (see appendix as an example) examine reporting of total deaths in household in NFHS1, 2,4 and 5 by social and economic subgroups examine patterns of death reporting by single year of age and explore whether these patterns are linked with error in age specific death rate compare reporting of under-5 deaths by household schedule respondent and in eligible women schedule Attempt to model age pattern of mortality to detect error by age for making adjustment
