SAGE India Wave 2 (2015)

The Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE-2) survey 2015 was the Wave 2 follow-up survey in India. SAGE Wave 1 (2007-08) is a follow-up survey of WHS-SAGE Wave 0 -2003 and SAGE Wave 2 is a follow-up survey of SAGE Wave 1 (2007-08). The same PSUs and the sample households covered across the six states in the World Health Survey, India, 2003 was the baseline sample for the SAGE.

The study design for the SAGE 2 India included samples of follow-up respondents from SAGE Wave 1 and the addition of some new respondents in the 18-49 age group. SAGE Wave-1 used two target populations: a large sample of persons aged 50 years and older, which is the focus of the study, and a smaller comparative sample of persons aged 18–49 years. All households were classified into one of these two mutually exclusive categories: one or more persons aged 50 years and older are selected from households classified as “50+ households” and one person aged 18–49 years from a household classified as an “18–49 household”. In older households, all persons aged 50 years and older (for example, spouses and siblings) were invited to participate. SAGE Wave 2 maintained the same two target populations: a large sample of persons aged 50 years and older which is the focus of the study and a smaller comparative sample of persons aged 18- 49 years. The SAGE Wave 2 India, 2015 is implemented in the six selected states of Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal that were covered in the SAGE Wave 1 India, 2007-10.

Six survey research organizations helped in conducting the field work in the six states - TNS for Assam, Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, for Karnataka, Nielsen India Pvt. Ltd. for Maharashtra, Indian Institute for Health Management Research (IIHMR), Jaipur, for Rajasthan, Research and Development Initiative (RDI), for Uttar Pradesh, and Economic Information Technology (EIT), Kolkata, for West Bengal.
